Heal the World Foundation was founded by Michael Jackson in 1992 as a charitable organization to aid children and the environment. It shared the name with Michael’s charitable single, the song he, by his own admission, was most proud of. The foundation’s goals included providing medicine for children and fighting child abuse as well as world hunger, drug and alcohol abuse. Heal the World Foundation worked with established local and national organizations to share expertise and infrastructure in delivering aid to disadvantaged children.
Accomplishments
June, 1992: 100,000 DM are donated to Sophia Childrens’ Hospital in Rotterdam.
July, 1992: 821,477,296 lire are donated to fund «La Partita del Cuore» (The Heart Match) in Rome. 120,000 DM donated to children’s charities in Estonia and Latvia.
September, 1992: 1 million pesetas are donated to charity headed by the Queen of Spain. A children’s playground is opened in an orphanage in Bucharest, Romania.
November, 1992: Forty seven tons of winter relief supplies are airlifted to the children of Sarajevo in association with AmeriCares, including medical items, blankets, winter clothing, and shoes.
December, 1992: Relief supplies are airlifted to children in Bosnia in association with Operation Christmas Child, consisting of 30,000 «shoebox gifts» of toys, school items, photographs and letters written by U.K. schoolchildren.
January, 1993: A new U.S. children’s relief initiative, Heal L.A., is announced in Los Angeles in collaboration with Cities In Schools, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the BEST Foundation, Watts Health Foundation, and the Partnership for a Drug Free America. The initiative is intended to help solve problems of inner-city youth by providing drug-abuse and AIDS prevention education, mentoring, and immunization campaigns. Over $1.25 million dollars of proceeds from Michael Jackson’s half-time performance at Super Bowl XXVII are donated to Heal L.A.
February, 1993: In association with Sega, an initiative is launched to distribute more than $108,000 of computer games and equipment to children’s hospitals, homes and charities throughout the U.K.
April, 1993: Michael Jackson makes an unannounced visit to three Heal L.A. project sites to participate in discussions with recipients and providers of the immunization, mentoring, and drug-abuse prevention programs.
May, 1993: With the assistance of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s Atlanta Project Immunization/Children’s Health Initiative, immunization of 17,000 children during 5 days is arranged in Atlanta, GA.
August, 1993: Jointly with Pepsi-Cola Thailand, $40,000 are donated to Crown Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s charity, the Rural School Children and Youth Development Fund in support of school lunch programs in rural villages in Thailand. In conjunction with Pepsi-Cola International, new ambulances are donated to the Contacts One Independent Living Center for Children in Moscow, Russia and the Hospital de Ninos Dr. Ricardo Gutierrez in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
October, 1993: $100,000 are donated to the Children’s Defense Fund, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, the Atlanta Project, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newark, New Jersey.
December, 1993: With the help of Gorbachev Foundation, 60,000 doses of children vaccine are airlifted to Tblisi, Georgia. In association with Operation Christmas Child, over 100,000 «shoebox gifts» of toys, small gifts, and letters are given to children of the former Yugoslavia.
January, 1994: In conjunction with Unihealth and the Los Angeles Immunization Coalition, vaccines are provided to children left homeless by the Los Angeles earthquake. Together with Discovery Toys, hundreds of toys are donated to the children in an immunization drive. Through Heal L.A., $85,000 are provided to earthquake relief efforts by non-profit organizations aiding families with long-term recovery (incl. the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center, Casa Rutilio Grande, Clinica Para Las Americas, Families in New Directions, Meeting Each Need With Dignity, Proyecto Esperanza, Pueblo Nuevo, and the Vaughn Street Family Center). In association with General Electric, Lever Brothers and Surf Wash, washers, dryers, and soap are donated to 25 non-profit organizations in order to provide free laundry services to families affected by the quake. Heal the World and Heal L.A. board member Edward James Olmos provides education about the earthquake safety to quake victims in shelters. Together with the Salvation Army, over 400 homeless children and parents are treated to a day at Universal Studios.
Spring-Summer 1994: Heal L.A. Immunization and Mentoring Initiatives is supported by visits of Kriss Kross to the George C. Page Children’s Hospital Community Health Center and Raven-Symone and Bryton McClure to the Bancroft Middle School.
Summer 1994: In conjunction with the Los Angeles Unified School District, Youth Services, I Have A Dream Foundation, Best Buddies, Overcoming Obstacles, and California One to One, 2000 children are provided with tickets to the concerts of Janet Jackson, the Beach Boys and to the L.A. Laker Jam.
August, 1994: In association with Toys ‘R Us and AmeriCares, $20,000 worth of toys, food, and supplies are distributed to children’s hospital in Budapest, Hungary.
Fall 1994: Heal L.A.’s implementation of the Los Angeles Team Mentoring Program in six Los Angeles Unified School District Middle Schools in the South Central Los Angeles and the Pico Union District reaches over 1000 young people.
October, 1994: The Community School/Safe Havens Initiative is launched. The initiative is designed to provide Los Angeles communities with safe environment in which students, families, and residents can pursue after-school academic and recreational activities.
February, 1995: Heal L.A. expands its curriculum offerings and program hours of the Community School/Safe Havens Initiative which grew to include over 1200 families.
March, 1995: The foundation pays for a liver transplant for young Hungarian boy, Bela Farkas.
April, 1995: 46 children from 17 nations are sponsored to gather at the Neverland ranch for the World Congress of Children, a three-day seminar to discuss drug abuse, homelessness, increasing violence, AIDS, and child abuse.
June, 1995: Heal the World/World Children’s Congress youth ambassadors present the findings of the World Children’s Congress to the World Summit of Children during the United Nations’ 50th Anniversary celebration in San Francisco, CA, and meet with U.N. Secretary Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and several U.N. ambassadors.
Summer 1995: Heal the World/World Children’s Congress youth ambassador from Mexico accompanies Children’s Torch of Hope across the U.S., bringing the message of the World Children’s Congress to over 30 events sponsored by the Coalition for Children of the Earth and EC2000.
October, 1995: Brownstone and Tasha Scott perform at Horace Mann Middle School to launch new school year for the Community School/Safe Havens Initiative. Heal the World/World Children’s Congress youth ambassadors report to the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child in Geneva, Switzerland.
December, 1995: Heal the World/World Children’s Congress youth ambassadors address the dedication of the «Guardians of the Future» monument in Mexico City co-sponsored by EC2000, Terra Christa Communications, UNICEF, the office of the mayor of Mexico City, and Coalition for Children of the Earth. In association with the International Rescue Committee, two pallets of toys are shipped to children in war-scarred Bosnia and Herzegovina.
February, 1996: Heal the World/World Children’s Congress youth ambassador from Mexico presents a model for creating sustainable environment to the U.N. Habitat II Prep Committee.
April, 1996: Heal the World/World Children’s Congress youth ambassadors attend Children First, a global forum in Atlanta, Georgia. The event, hosted by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Rosalynn Carter, the Carter Center and the Task Force for Child Survival and co-sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the World Bank, and Heal the World, brings together 360 representatives from 100 countries to discuss strategies to improve the quality of life for children. Heal the World/World Children’s Congress youth ambassadors attend the Spectrum of Light Youth Conference in Washington, D.C. to form partnerships to emphasize the need for sustainable society based on healthy environment.
